TU Juan

屠娟

Tu Juan is an artist specializing in ceramic and glass art, currently based in Shanghai.

She holds a BFA from Jingdezhen Ceramic University and was an academic program representative at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway. She also earned an MFA in Glass Art from the College of Fine Arts at Shanghai University and was a visiting scholar at University College Cork, Ireland.

Tu Juan is a female artist full of energy and insight. With her unique artistic perspective and exceptional craftsmanship, she brings together two seemingly disparate materials—Western glass and Eastern ceramics—through groundbreaking creation and imaginative collision. Her works are not merely a fusion of materials, but a cross-cultural dialogue between East and West. This encounter across cultures generates immense energy, allowing viewers to feel both a tremor in the fabric of time and space and a visual jolt as they engage with her pieces.

Glass, originating in the West, is transparent and pure, symbolizing openness and inclusiveness;
China, represents the East—steady and restrained, bearing history and tradition. These two distinct materials are each filled with uncertainty during casting and firing, with unpredictability emerging in the processes of high heat and cooling. Like a magician, Tu Juan deftly fuses and masterfully controls them. The weight of ceramics and the lightness of glass collide in her hands to form a unique artistic language—one that tells stories of time, space, memory, and dreams. Everything is as fleeting as time, and yet as eternal as solidified stillness.
