

ZHANG Xiaodong

Founder of the Begonia Season Book Art Studio and a famed artisan known for restoring the innovative dragon scale binding technique of the Tang Dynasty. Zhang Xiaodong is a book designer and the cultural heir of the art of dragon scale binding. Born in 1981 in Zhangjiakou, Hebei, and a graduate of the Shenyang University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Zhang is also the inventor of the special form of warp dragon binding books and holds over 20 book invention patents. In addition, he is the director of the China Printing Technology Association, a member of the Book Binding Art Committee of the China Association of Publishers, the artistic director of Begonia Season Book Art Studio.
In 2025, Zhang Xiaodong was named a finalist for the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize with his work Good Fortune #2, crafted from Chinese Xuan paper and mineral pigments. This prestigious recognition further affirms his outstanding contributions to the innovation and artistry of contemporary paper craftsmanship.
